Central Vietnam Floods
Hoi An Begins Massive Clean Up
Historic rains submerged parts of Central Vietnam this week, flooding the heritage cities of Hoi An and Hue, cutting power to thousands of households, and leaving communities scrambling to recover. As floodwaters recede, residents, volunteers, and military personnel are now working together to clean up mud-filled streets and damaged homes.
Key Updates:
• Heavy nonstop rains caused rivers in Hoi An and Hue to overflow, turning streets into waterways and flooding residential areas, businesses, and heritage zones.
• Local authorities confirmed multiple fatalities with several individuals still reported missing as assessments continue.
• More than 16,000 homes were flooded, farms and rice fields were heavily damaged, and at least 75,000 residents experienced power outages.
• Army troops were deployed to hardest-hit areas to assist with clearing debris, restoring sanitation, and helping families return to their homes.
• In Hoi An, tourism workers and business owners have begun clearing mud, washing storefronts, and salvaging merchandise to prepare for the reopening of the Ancient Town.
• Weather forecasters are monitoring another weather system that may bring new rains in the coming days. Residents are advised to stay alert.
Scene in Hoi An:
Residents and soldiers rushed to the Old Town early in the morning armed with shovels, hoses, and pails. Streets were covered in thick brown mud. Shop owners placed wet furniture and goods outside to dry, while volunteers helped scrape mud from sidewalks and clear garbage washed in by the floods. Local youth groups distributed bottled water and hot food to affected families.

In Hoi An’s Ancient Town, residents and uniformed soldiers join forces to clear mud and debris from flood-hit streets. Lanterns hang above water-stained walls as shopkeepers wash muddy floors, volunteers shovel silt into sacks, and children help clean salvaged items under the morning sun. A strong spirit of bayanihan fills the heritage streets as Hoi An slowly rises again.
